Blog Entry 13: Quote-Response

Quote:
Edwin Markham (1852-1940)
Outwitted
“He drew a circle that shut me out—
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!”
(Kennedy Pg.633)

Response:
After reading this poem over a couple of times I found that the circle to me is love. When in relationships we tend to build up a wall to protect our hearts and our emotions from people. I think that the first circle is the wall he built to keep her feeling out and his feeling in. The second circle it the circle of her love that she put around him so that he had to see her feelings and reveal his own. Even thought this poem only has 4 lines there is an amazing depth to it. It looks so simple and is so very complicated at the same time. I see a woman in love with a man who is hiding behind his “circle.” She has hard feelings about him hiding but doesn’t give up. In the end she is able to bring her “circle” around him. It connects the reader to their prior relationship without much effort. I enjoyed this poem a lot. It took me reading it a few times to really understand how I felt though.
