Quote:
Edwin Markham (1852-1940)
Outwitted
“He drew a circle that shut me out—
Heretic, rebel, a thing to flout.
But Love and I had the wit to win:
We drew a circle that took him in!”
(Kennedy Pg.633)
Response:
After reading this poem over a couple of times I found that the circle to me is love. When in relationships we tend to build up a wall to protect our hearts and our emotions from people. I think that the first circle is the wall he built to keep her feeling out and his feeling in. The second circle it the circle of her love that she put around him so that he had to see her feelings and reveal his own. Even thought this poem only has 4 lines there is an amazing depth to it. It looks so simple and is so very complicated at the same time. I see a woman in love with a man who is hiding behind his “circle.” She has hard feelings about him hiding but doesn’t give up. In the end she is able to bring her “circle” around him. It connects the reader to their prior relationship without much effort. I enjoyed this poem a lot. It took me reading it a few times to really understand how I felt though.

Blog Entry 12: Poem Paraphrase
A Paraphrase of “First Poem for You” by: Kim Addonizio (b.1954)
I like to touch every inch of your tattoo when we are in the dark. I know where they are by heart and by memory of your body. I know the neat lines of the lightning bolts just above your nipple. Without hesitation I can find the swirling blues waves on your shoulder where the serpent and dragon are fighting. Then making love to you and then lay quietly on the sheets and kissing the tattoos “pretty pictures” on your skin. Those tattoos will last through everything until the day we are cremated. They will last through our hard times when/if they come. No matter what happens between us those tattoos will still be there. Knowing that no matter what happens they will still be there is a little scary. The only way they will not exist is your entire body being burned to ashes is terrifying. So I continue to touch them, trying to understand. (Kennedy Pg.601)
I thought that this was a very nice poem. It not only shows love but it shows worry. I am not sure how well I did paraphrasing it but I tried. It is hard to interpret because it has more detail in it than most of the poems we have covered so far. I should like this because I need more detail but when it comes to paraphrasing it makes it more difficult. I think that the way she wrote the poem shows a little fear of her mate. However, her title does not show fear so it is a little confusing. I assume that she is a very scared person who does not take many risks like her mate, that she does not have tattoos like he does. She looks up to him for the commitment that he has to have tattoos but is scared for him because of them also. It was a very interesting poem to read and try to paraphrase.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks
Carmen

Quote:
Hilaire Belloc (1870-1953)
"The Hippopotamus"
I shoot the Hippopotamus
with bullets made of platinum,
Because if I use leaden ones
his hide is sure to flatten ‘em.
(Kennedy Pg.567)
Response:
I found this poem made me smile. I could picture a hunter sighted in on a hippo ready to shoot. He had a slight smile across his lips because he knew something that hippo did not. He knew that he had loaded his gun with platinum bullets that would penetrate the tough hippo’s hide. I can also see him taking the shot with the leaden bullets. Hearing the sound in my ears as it hits the hippos hide and falls effortlessly to the ground unable to penetrate the hippo.
We have read quite a few poems in this class so far and to be honest most of them have frustrated me. I am not a big poem person to start with so reading them is difficult. To add to that I second guess everything in my life so when I think I know what the writer is trying to say I start second guessing myself. I feel bad writing about poems because it make me feel like I am stealing their work. Being able to write good poetry I am sure takes a lot of talent and I don’t want to ruin that. I believe that poetry is to be interpreted by the reader but being the person that I am I still feel bad for doing just that. I hope you all enjoy this poem as I did. There has not been many of these poems that made me smile and this one sure did.

Blog Entry 10:Song Quote/Response
BROKEN
“Little girl don’t be so blue
I know what you’re going through
Don’t let it beat you up.
Hitten walls and getting scars
Only makes you who you are
Only makes you who you are.
No matter how much your heart is aching
There is beauty in the breaking.”
“When you’re broken, in a million little pieces
And you’re trying, but you can’t hold on anymore
Every tear falls down for a reason
Don’t you stop believing in yourself
When you’re broken.”
Sang by: Lindsey Haun
Song Writers: Petraglia, Angelo; Lauer, Angela; Lindsy, Hillary
I put two quotes from the same song because I thought the chorus needed to be up there with my original quote too. I think that at some point in everyone’s lives they hear a song that really affects them. It can be a sad song that affects them emotionally or even a happy song that makes them smile every time they hear it. This is a really hard thing for me to talk about but I am going to go for it.
After I had my son 3 months ago I went into a deep depression. I chose to cry instead of doing what I could to fix it. It was one of those points in your lives when everything and I mean everything went wrong. My son was sick as a newborn, I had a 1 year old daughter all over the place, my boyfriend couldn’t get his ass off the couch and help me and I was paying all the bills. I am a very stressful person so all of that really put me over the edge. While taking my kids to my parent’s house for the night my iPod hit this song and everything changed. It was like all the weight on my shoulders was lifted. In all reality nothing changed but because my way of thinking changed everything changed. I still get a little stressed out now and then. Especially with all the work in this class but I am now in control and doing great. Seriously if you have never heard this song you really need to listen to it.
This song talks about being broken inside and out. There is no way that I would have ever though there would be beauty in my heart breaking but after listening to this song and thinking about what it really means I can now understand how there could be beauty there. It is an amazing song and she does an amazing job singing it. I am speechless on how to explain everything about it. I hope everyone that reads this post will listen to it.

Blog Entry 9: Haiku
Hello again everyone! Ok so this whole haiku thing is very interesting. I gave it a whirl so we will see how I did.
Contemporary Haiku
His eyes red with fury
Blur of fists
Sparks behind my eyes.
I am not sure if I did that right but I tried. Here is a second one just for good measure.
Lips soft as silk
Tight embrace
Legs go weak.
Please let me know what you guys think. If I did it wrong let me know but I tried to follow it how it said to do it in our book. Thanks

Blog Entry 8: Poem Paraphrase
I am not sure about everyone else but I found this assignment very hard. I am not a reader of poetry and find poetry very hard to follow. As a reader I need everything spelled out for me word for word and poetry leaves too much for me to fill in.
A Paraphrase of “Home is so Sad” by: Philip Larkin
A home is sad because it is exactly the way it was when you left when you return. Nothing is changed, all the mess is still there waiting for your return. A home is so comfortable because it is your own. Everything is left just the way it was when the last person left home, shaped to the comfort of them before they left. The home is the same as when you left is as if it did this to make you happy, to make you feel back at home as soon as you enter it. Without anyone to please it seems to wither. A home has no heart so with no one to please it goes back to being exactly what it was the moment it was left. It is you home and joyous to have you in it. When you look around you can see how your home use to be and how it is today. You notice more of what could be, should be and use to be while looking slowly at the changes. Looking at the décor in your home you can see the comfort that it provides. The comforts were put there by you but it is the home that keeps it all in one place to create you a home. Looking around sometime can be sad though because you see the past to the present and what should have been done and has not been. The music that is still out from the last time the piano was played, and the vase sitting on the table with withered flowers that need to be thrown out.
(Poem From Kennedy Pgs.789-90)
I am not sure if I did this correctly but I tried my best. I enjoyed this poem because its title makes it seem like it is going to be about a sad place. However when I read it I see a happy, maybe stressful, but still happy place. I don’t think of things that are comfortable to be sad so it kind of threw me off.

Blog Entry 7: Freestyle
I have not had a chance this week to do any "fun" reading. The extent of my fun reading to reading to my daughter Payten. She loves books, which is a really good feeling for me, because as a child I loved books too. It takes becoming a mother to understand how much you want your kids to get your good qualities and how you try your hardest to keep them from ever seeing any of the bad ones.
I have changed so much becoming a mother. I was a nail biter, I would chew them until they bled. Not that I really had a reason to it was just something I have done since I was a baby. My mother said that I sucked my thumb and chewed my nails, she was so worried. LOL. Well the point is that when I got pregnant with my daughter I did everything I could so that I would stop chewing them. Everything I tried stressed me out and I ended up chewing my nails again because I was stressed, nothing worked. Then I got pregnant with my son 2 months after my daughter was born and life got even more stressful. However there is a happy ending because after my son was born 3 months ago I was so busy that I forgot to chew them. I literally woke up one day and realized that I had really long nails and I had to clip them they were so long. Since that day I have not chewed on them again. Amazingly I haven't even wanted to chew them which is a great feeling.
I find being a mother very rewarding and very stressful. Both myself and my boyfriend (their father) are high strung people. So as you would guess our children are a handful. My son Teagan is only 3 months old and is so active I can't keep up. He is going to be running marathons by the time he is one. His sister on the other hand just likes getting into anything and everything in her reach. She has this crooked little smile that she makes so we know she knows she is being naughty. She loves to be chased and I am finding less and less time to rest.
Being a parent is so rewarding. You may want to pull your hair out but one smile or giggle from their little faces makes everything but them melt away. The most amazing noise I have ever heard was my daughter and sons first giggle. I want to tickle them both all the time just to hear them laugh!
I hope you all have or will get to experience being parents. Not everything is cake and ice cream but in the end it is all worth it!

Blog Entry 6: Quote/Response
Quote:
“For there lay The Combs—the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshipped for long in a Broadway window. Beautiful combs, pure tortoise shell, with jeweled rims—just the shade to wear in the beautiful vanished hair. They were expensive combs, she knew, and her heart had simply craved and yearned over them without the least hope of possession. And now, they were hers, but the tresses that should have adorned the coveted adornments were gone.” (The Gift of the Magi by: William Sydney Porter Pg. 165)
“”Dell,” said he, “let’s put our Christmas present’s away and keep ‘em a while. They’re too nice to use just as presents. I sold the watch to get the money to buy your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on.””
Response:
I did both quotes because this story really need both quotes to me to somewhat make sense. For this class we were told to skim through everything but the stories we were reading. The reason behind this was so that we wouldn't miss having the emotional connection with the story. In reading this story I was on the edge of my seat because of her cutting her hair. I cut my hair when I was pregnant with my daughter and I thought that my boyfriend was going to leave me over it. In the end he got over it, he did not handle it the way her husband did in this story so I felt really connected to her. It really made me look hard at my life and the hard times that after reading this really weren't so hard after all. I know that this story is set back quite a few years but it still is an awesome story. Not only does it display courage and kindness on her part but it shows the love that they both have for each other. The way the author describes her combs you can actually visualize them. We have read quite a few stories so far this term and I found myself actually tearing up at the end of this one. It is kind of hard to read due to the age of the writing but I wished that there were more to the story that it didn't just end. Hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. It gives you hope, maybe not even in the same area but after reading it I feel loved and that there is always possibilities.

Blog Entry 5: Freestyle
For my freestyle writing I wanted to write about the last 2 books of the Twilight Saga. I wrote about the second book "New Moon" last week and I have read the last 2 books since then. I actually surprised myself because I could NOT put them down. I had to finish the saga. My boyfriend is obsessed with collecting movies...all kinds of movies. We have 300+ movies in our collection. The reason I mentioned this is because I have seen lots of movies and have never wanted to meet any of the actors as much as I want to meet the writer of the Twilight Saga, Stephenie Meyer! I can't explain it in words very well but I guess I would just like to give her a hug. Her books, even though they are fiction, meant more to me than anything I have ever read in my life. I may not have read a lot off books since becoming an adult but I did read a lot when I was younger and none of them touched me like her saga did.
'Eclipse" by Stephenie Meyer, the third book in her Twilight Saga. Like the first two books these books are set up so you see and hear everything from the view of Bella. Not only is this a "scary/si-fi" book but she still is able to make you smile. I am not going to go into details of the story for fear I might ruin it for someone else. I would not want to do that because I know how much I got out of them. In the fourth book "Breaking Dawn" Stephenie broke it up into 3 parts. The first set of chapters is the same as the rest of the books set from Bella's eyes. Then the middle sections takes a turn and is from Jacobs eyes. The third section then goes back into being from Bella's eyes again. To be honest this is the only thing that I didn't like about the saga. I read through these 600 page books in less than a day a piece but when it came to the section based out of Jacob's point of view I struggled to keep up. I think this is because I had read 3, books 600 pages a piece long strictly from Bella's point of view. When it suddenly switches it is hard to get use to. I am not sure what was the reasoning behind it but never the less these books ROCK!
These books are fictional, based off the lives of a young girl and her experience with the vampires she meets at her school. This is far fetched to say the least but the way that Stephenie portrays these saga of books they can seem like reality. They aren't blood and gore the main thing is that they are a long and very emotional love story. I have never read a book before that could have be rolling laughing at one minute and bawling my eyes out the next.
I took the time to look up the author online and went to her website. There really wasn't too much there but I did however find a section on how she came up with the story and once again she had me bawling and laughing. I am seriously telling your people, this lady is amazing. I hope that she continues writing more than ever cause I will be right there buying every single book.

Quote
"On her way home she usually bought a slice of honey cake at the baker's. It was her Sunday treat. Sometimes there was an almond in her slice, sometimes not. It made a great difference. If there was an almond it was like carrying home a tiny present-a surprise-something that might very well not have been there. She hurried on the almond Sundays and struck the match for the kettle in quite a dashing way.
But to-day she passed the baker's boy. climbed the stairs, went into the little dark room-her room like a cupboard-and sat down on the red eiderdown. She say there for a long time. The box that the fur came out of was on the bed. She unclasped the necklet quickly; quickly, without looking, laid it inside. But when she put the lid on she though she heard something crying."
Response
WOW! Maybe I am overly sensitive but this really made me feel bad for Miss Brill. She was and older women who liked watching people and did so every Sunday. It was her routine for Sundays and as you can read in this quote she broke the routine. What you can not read in the quote is the reasoning as I see it for her change in routine. I feel that every human being out there is routine. Even if it is the simplest things that you don't even notice everyone of us has some sort of routine. For example, one my routines is giving my daughter a bath at 7pm, playing for 30 minutes, reading her a book and then tucking her into bed. Routines are sometimes broking but in Miss Brill's case I think that she was seriously hurt. Everyone knows that not all "young adults" respect their elders but in this story you can see how much that hurt Miss Brill. She took great pride in how she put herself together and when she was laughed at by those young adults it must have crushed her. I am sure that when you get to be Miss Brill's age you look forward to doing the things that make you the happiest and in her case it was watching people, nature and just being outdoors. She thought that others would enjoy her being there too, so when she was hurt it effect more than her feelings. She then wonders about everyone is feeling about her. Is she a burden to everyone? Is she in the way when she goes out on Sunday's? Does she really not know how to dress herself? What was wrong with her precious furs? All of this will be weighting on her heart and mind for quite a while now. Poor thing!

Poor thing!

Blog Entry 3: Freestyle
I am currently reading Eclipse from the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer. Talk about an addicting saga that is for sure. I started out by reading New Moon two days ago and couldn't put it down. Now I am onto number 3 and I can't believer how addicting these books are. I have always liked reading but being older now I am getting more and more out of reading. Not only does it give me a chance to relax but it is so much more entertaining to me than watching TV. My boyfriend loves TV so it is on most of the time but I get so board with most of the shows he watches, reading my books use more brain power and I feel smart after reading a book unlike how I feel after watching "The Simpson's" or "My Name is Earl".
I have a little girl who loves books. She is 14 months old now and has been very interested in books since she was about 9 months old. I went to Walmart and got her the touch and feel books. She really seems to enjoy looking and touching all the pictures. I am very lucky because my parents are my babysitters and they have taking a lot of time to help her and get her interested in reading. I take a lot of time to read to her and she seems to like almost any book as long as there is a lot of pictures. She will point everything out and tries to tell you what it is.
I am really big on my children enjoying to read because I can see the major difference in my boyfriend Justin and I when it comes to reading. Justin would rather poke a fork in his eye than read a book. I don't think that it has anything to do with him not knowing how or it embarrassing him he just HATES reading. I love reading, have loved reading for as long as I can remember. I know that sometimes I don't really make enough time to read but I do try to when I have time. I think there is a lack of reading these days because of TV. TV has been around for quite a while but it just keeps getting more and more popular. If there is a book that is turned into a movie the average person will watch the movie and not even think twice about reading the book. We live in a time of convenience and watching a movie is so much easier than reading the book. The book may have more detail but it will take you 5 times a long to read as if you watched the movie. I am going to do my best to make sure that my children like reading, when they get into high school and college if they hate reading it will make everything harder.
I hope that I am not the only one who feels this way, maybe someday they will be equal. (TV to books)

Blog Entry 2: Quote-Response
Quote
"In walks three girls in nothing but bathing suits. I'm in the third check-out slot, with my back to the door, so I don't see them until they're over by the bread. The one that caught my eye first was the one in the plaid green two-piece. She was a chunky kid, with a good tan and a sweet broad soft-looking can with those two crescents of white just under it, where the sun never seems to hit, at top of the backs of her legs. I stood there with my hand on a box of HiHo crackers trying to remember if I rang it up or not. I ring it up again and the customer starts giving me hell. She's one of those cash-register-watchers, a witch about fifty with rouge in her cheekbones and no eyebrows, and I know it made her day to trip me up. She'd been watching cash registers for fifty years and probably never seen a mistake before." (A &P by John Updike Pg. 15)

To be honest it took me reading this quote a couple of times to realize he was talking about her "butt". I know a little slow but beating around the bust about it gets confusing. Ha Ha. I really thought that they way he explained how she looked was in great detail or at least great detail of the one body part. The detail he put about the older lady at his register was detailed also. I guess what hit me the most was that I could actually see this quote in action. We have all been in a checkout line and caught someone checking someone else out. And I know everyone at some point has seen the older lady as he described her. I actually felt like was there watching it all go down as it did. Even without major description little adjectives added here and there make it very easy to put yourself in the story. He took great effort in explaining her being tan, chunky, and what she was wearing.
The main word that stuck out to me was "can" because I don't think I have ever heard a "rear end" called that before. It took me reading it out loud to my boyfriend before I felt retarded for asking him his opinion but of course a guy would understand that immediately.
